Drought Inspection or Photo Session? Are Farmers’ Suffering and Security Personnel Being Ignored? Questions Adv. Shankar Chavan

Drought Inspection or a Photo-Op? Are Security Personnel Now Being Neglected Along with Farmers' Grievances? — State President Adv. Shankar Chavan Raises Questions "Should the 130 million people of Maharashtra expect sensitivity from the government, or merely witness tours, heavy security, and photo sessions?" Adv. Shankar Chavan Mumbai | Representative Adv. Shankar Chavan, Maharashtra State President of the Janhit Lokshahi Party and an advocate at the Bombay High Court, has launched a sharp critique on social media against Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding his drought assessment tour of Dharashiv. Citing a video clip from the Chief Minister's tour, he asked, "Isn't humanity greater than tours and photo-ops?" His post referenced both the suffering of drought-affected farmers and an incident reportedly involving a security officer from the Chief Minister's security detail, raising the fundamental question: toward whom should sensitivity actually be directed? Meanwhile, the Chief Minister had toured the drought-hit regions of Latur, Dharashiv, and Solapur on September 23. Allegations of Preventing Farmers from Approaching the CM in Dharashiv During the tour in Dharashiv, opposition leaders alleged that farmers were barred from meeting the Chief Minister. MLA Kailas Patil claimed that police restrained farmers using ropes, triggering a political controversy over the management and arrangement of the visit. In response, the BJP maintained that the opposition was merely politicizing the issue. Consequently, discussions around the Chief Minister's drought visit have expanded from agricultural distress to scrutiny of the administrative arrangements themselves. Is Due Care Taken of Security Personnel? Against this backdrop, Adv. Shankar Chavan raised a deeper concern via his social media post. He questioned whether adequate care is provided to on-duty security personnel who find themselves in distress during a tour meant to assess the destroyed crops and grievances of farmers. In the shared video, security staff and others can be seen assisting an individual on the road. However, the exact cause of this specific incident or official details regarding the individual have not been independently confirmed by primary news sources. Rather than drawing definitive conclusions strictly from the footage, the broader issue of basic human empathy raised by Adv. Chavan takes center stage. A Tour Should Strive to Understand the Pain of the People According to Adv. Chavan, every human life and its well-being matters—whether a farmer, police officer, security guard, or ordinary citizen. He emphasized that a Chief Minister’s visit must not be reduced to a purely administrative routine or a political spectacle; it should serve as a genuine conduit to understand the pain of the public. His post highlighted that during severe crises such as droughts, priority should be given to meeting farmers directly, hearing their grievances, and providing transparent timelines for urgent relief. Reports note that the Chief Minister himself acknowledged the severity of the situation in Dharashiv and Latur, assuring aid to the affected farmers. Discourse Surrounding Alleged Scuffles Opposition leaders also alleged that minor scuffles with farmers took place during the Dharashiv tour, which prompted widespread discussion both on social media and across political circles. However, given the differing accounts and official statements regarding these allegations, arriving at a definitive conclusion remains difficult. "Humanity is Greater Than Tours and Photo-Ops" Adv. Chavan concluded his post by underlining the core message: "Humanity is greater than tours and photo-ops." He noted that relief for struggling farmers, the welfare and safety of administrative and security personnel, and compassionate engagement with ordinary citizens must remain at the heart of governance. Consequently, even as the Chief Minister's tour has concluded, Adv. Shankar Chavan's post highlights the most pressing question remaining: "To what extent will this tour bring actual relief to the lives of farmers?"
